Both the oil and the gas contain mixtures of hydrocarbons which, if further refined, have a higher value than the original fuel. For example, the oil could be further refined in order to manufacture road fuels or marine fuels, and the gas could be further fractionated to split out and isolate the hydrogen, propane and other valuable fractions within the hydrocarbon mix.
